On October 19th at 18h15 a new event took place at the European Parliament (room A5E2): “INTERNET OF THINGS & 5G REVOLUTION. The highway for the future of EU services and industry”, hosted by the MEPs Massimiliano Salini (EPP) and Patrizia Toia (S&D).
The debate was divided into three sectorial discussion groups along the axes of Energy efficiency, Digital Health and Industry 4.0.
The SOTEU communication, on behalf of the European Commission, pleaded for a “better connectivity for all citizens and businesses”. This policy priority was illustrated by Jean Claude Juncker as follow: “We need to be connected. Our economy needs it. People need it. And we have to invest in that connectivity now”. That means to carry innovation process in the overall industrial sectors, create new high-quality job opportunities and provide more and more efficient services for citizens. The event was a favorable occasion to examine in depth this EU priority and the opportunities coming out of this for all actors involved.
In fact, a new digital revolution of the EU single market is a priority for industries – from big firms to start-ups – in order to improve their productivity; for consumers, in order to expand their possibilities in term of a wider and more competitive market within the EU, both at national and regional/local level; and finally for investors in order to encourage the race towards a new way of producing. The event format envisaged three debating groups followed by the conclusions, took by many institutional representatives.
