Tackling Disinformation, Empowering Democracy. Which Strategy for the EU?“. This is the title of the VideoTalk held on 14 December organised by the Institute for Competitiveness and FTI Consultancy.

The event was opened with a short introduction by I-Com President Stefano da Empoli and Mireia Quingles, Director Public Affairs and Communications at FTI Consulting. The main speaker, Daniel Braun, Deputy Head of Cabinet of European Commission Vice President for Values and Transparency, then took the floor. There followed an open debate moderated by Mattia Ceracchi, I-Com Head of EU Affairs, before Ms Quingles and Mr Braun’s closing remarks.

Bringing together EU and national institution representatives, companies, research and business organisations, trade and consumer associations and other relevant stakeholders, the event offered a forum to discuss the upcoming European Commission initiatives around disinformation and election integrity. It was also an opportunity to hear from Daniel Braun, deputy head of cabinet of Commission Vice-President Vera Jourová, on the priorities outlined in the European Democracy Action Plan, published on December 3 by the Commission, and on its intersection with the newly launched Digital Services Act.

What are the main threats the EU is facing when it comes to disinformation and election integrity? How have these changed in the past few years? What are the European Commission’s main priorities in the area of disinformation and election integrity? What are the next steps following the presentation of the EDAP? How have platforms improved in their efforts against disinformation and to support election integrity in the past few years – under the Code of Conduct on Disinformation and as part of structured dialogue with the European Commission? What are the main areas for improvement? These and other questions emerged from the discussion.
