The governance of the pharmaceutical sector: characteristics and criticalities of the Italian model

Working paper
Edmondo MOSTACCI, Graziella ROMEO

The contribution analyses the current governance of the pharmaceutical market, with particular emphasis on certain issues, such as the pricing of medicinal products, which seem to be of particular importance. In particular, after a brief introduction focused on the public aims of pharmaceuticals and the essential structure of the relevant market, the authors focus on the governance of public spending on the purchase of medicines and the allocation of available resources. In addition, particular attention is paid to the complex nature of the regulation of the sector and to the intervention in the field of a plurality of actors, among which the role played by AIFA stands out, and to the possibilities for stakeholders to intervene within the decision-making processes.
