Digital, energy and health: this week’s Brussels agenda in a nutshell

The week of 18-22 April is packed with activities of interest for the Parliament as the work of the parliamentary committees will resume. Among others, the following parliamentary committees will be meeting this week: The Committee for the Internal Market (IMCO), the Committee for Foreign Affairs (AFET), the Committee for the Environment (ENVI), the Committee for Budgets (BUDG) and the Committee for Social Affairs (EMLP). Furthermore, the symposium on Access to Data will take place in Paris next Thursday, while the meeting (videoconference) of the European Medicines Agencies Co-operation on Legal and Legislative Issues (EMACOLEX) will be held on Thursday and Friday. As for the Council, for this upcoming week (18-22 April), no meetings are scheduled.

As follows, the main events of the week concerning the digital, energy and health fields (and more).

DIGITAL

  • Wednesday 20 April 2022: The members of the IMCO will be updated by Danish MEP Christel Schaldemose (S&D), on the progress of the ongoing interinstitutional negotiations on the Digital Services Act (DSA). On the same day, the committee will hold an exchange of views with Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton as part of the structured dialogue.
  • Thursday 21 April 2022: The symposium on Data Access will take place in Paris. The event will bring together representatives of Member States, European institutions and relevant agencies to discuss the work done on the subject by the EU Council and the European Commission in recent years.
  • Friday 22 April 2022: The fifth round of political negotiations for the DSA will take place.

ENERGY

  • Wednesday 20 April 2022: During the meeting of the ENVI Committee, Luxembourg MEP Christophe Hansen will present his draft report on the Commission’s proposal for a regulation aimed at ending the importation of products derived from supply systems associated with deforestation or forest degradation to the ENVI committee. On the same day, the committee responsible for budgets (BUDG) will vote on its opinions on the Social Climate Fund, on ETS-based own resources and CBAM-based own resources.
  • Thursday 21 April 2022: ENVI members will address the issue of the circular economy from an industrial perspective while exchanging views with the Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton.

HEALTH

  • Wednesday 20 April 2022: The Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakides will take part in the meeting of the ENVI Committee, during which she will present MEPs with the Commission’s current priorities regarding Covid-19 and the implementation of the Farm to Fork strategy.
  • Thursday 21 and Friday 22 April 2022: The videoconference of Emacolex (European Medicines Agencies Co-operation of Legal and Legislatives), the informal working group of the network of the Heads of Medicines Agencies (HMA), will be held. The event will bring together legal and regulatory experts, especially those from the competent national authorities in the European Union, as well as representatives of the European Medicines Agency and the European Commission. The mission of the group is to facilitate cooperation among Member States on legal and legislative matters relating to medicines.

FURTHER APPOINTMENTS

  • Wednesday 20 April 2022: During the meeting of the INTA Committee, MEPs will discuss the amendments to the draft own-initiative report on the future of EU investment policy prepared by the German MEP Anna Cavazzini (Greens). The draft report focuses on the compatibility of international investment agreements with the priorities of the Union, and on the modernisation of the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT).
