Digital, energy and health: this week’s Brussels agenda in a nutshell



The European agenda from 12 to 16 September will include the following appointments. The European Parliament will meet in plenary session from 12 to 15 September. Among the activities on the agenda is the discussion and vote on a number of energy dossiers, including the Directive for the Promotion of Energy from Renewable Sources and the Energy Efficiency Directive. Meetings of a number of parliamentary committees are also scheduled, including the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) and, in joint proceedings, the Committee on Budgets (BUDG) and the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON).

As far as the Commission is concerned, President von der Leyen will deliver the annual State of the Union address during the parliamentary plenary session on Wednesday. The Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Education and Youth will attend the European Innovation Campus, while Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal will receive the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA).

Finally, Brno in the Czech Republic, will host two digital-themed events – the European Conference on Security Research in Cyberspace and the Open Source Driving the European Digital Decade.

DIGITAL

Monday 12 September 2022: the Parliamentary Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) will meet in Strasbourg. Among the items on the agenda is the approval of Estonian MEP Andrus Ansip‘s draft opinion on the amendment of the regulation establishing a European Digital Identity. Responsible for the dossier for the parliament is Croatian MEP Romana Jerković (S&D).

Monday 12 to Wednesday 14 September 2022: The European Conference on Security Research in Cyberspace will be hosted in Brno. The three days will be dedicated to sharing information and expertise in the field of cyberspace security and discussing the challenges and opportunities arising from the sector.

Tuesday, 13 September 2022: The collegial meeting of the European Commission will take place. Items on the agenda will include the Cyber Resilience Act, the Media Freedom Act, as well as the presentation of the Single Market Emergency Instrument announced by the Commission in May 2021.

Wednesday 14 to Thursday 15 September 2022: Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, will participate in the first edition of the European Innovation Campus, organised in Nice. The event will be an opportunity for all stakeholders of the innovation system to meet. Among the various activities, two workshops will focus on Artificial Intelligence and the theme of digital in culture and creativity.

ENERGY

From Monday 12 to Wednesday 14 September 2022: MEPs will debate and vote on the proposed revision of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED). This report was voted on by ITRE, the responsible committee, on 13 July. The dossier rapporteur is German MEP Markus Pieper (EPP). It will also follow the debate and vote on the recast of the Energy Efficiency Directive – also amended by the same committee in July. The rapporteur is Danish MEP Niels Fuglsang (S&D).

Thursday 15 September 2022: The European Commission Executive Vice-President, Frans Timmermans, responsible for the European Green Deal will receive the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Faith Birol, in Brussels.

OTHER APPOINTMENTS

Monday 12 September 2022: The Parliamentary Committee on Budgets (BUDG) and the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (Econ), in joint proceedings, will welcome Valdis Dombrovskis, Executive Vice-President for an economy that serves the people, and Paolo Gentiloni, Commissioner for Economic Affairs, for a dialogue on recovery and resilience.

Wednesday 14 September 2022: The parliamentary plenary morning session on Wednesday will begin with a statement by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on the State of the Union 2022, which will be followed by a debate. The Statement will serve to prepare the Commission’s programme for the year 2023.
