Digital, sustainability and health. The Brussels’ weekly agenda in a nutshell

The week of January 27-31 will feature the presentation of the Competitive Compass by European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen on Wednesday as its most important event.

The proposal, which aims to define the economic strategy for the Commission’s work through 2029, seeks to address the EU’s innovation gap compared to its global competitors, ensure the bloc’s economic security, and advance the decarbonization of European industry.

As for the European Parliament, a week of committee work begins following the plenary session in Strasbourg.

DIGITAL

Monday 27 January. Andreas Schwab (EPP), chair of the working group on the implementation of the Digital Markets Act, will deliver a report on the group’s activities to the Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee (IMCO). Following this, Brando Benifei (S&D), co-chair of the group, will present the working group’s report on the implementation and enforcement of the Artificial Intelligence Act in the same setting.

Tuesday 28 January. The Industry, Research and Energy Committee (ITRE) will hold an exchange of views on the AI Liability Directive. Subsequently, the committee will discuss the compliance of social media platforms with the Digital Services Act in light of recent developments.

SUSTAINABILITY

Monday 27 January. The Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) will host a public hearing titled “Towards a European Water Resilience Strategy – An EU Blue Deal.”

Wednesday 29 January. The ITRE committee is scheduled to adopt the Agreement on the Interpretation and Application of the Energy Charter Treaty by the EU, the European Atomic Energy Community, and its Member States.

HEALTH

Wednesday 29 January. The Committee on Public Health will present the European Court of Auditors’ special report titled “Digitalization of Healthcare — EU Support to Member States Has Been Overall Effective, but Challenges Remain in Utilizing Related Funds”, delivered by Joëlle Elvinger, member of the European Court of Auditors.
