Digital, sustainability and health. The Brussels’ weekly agenda in a nutshell

The week of Feb. 3-7 will feature a series of meetings of the Council of the European Union in Warsaw, which will also include a visit by the College of Commissioners to the Polish government with participation by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. In Brussels, meanwhile, parliamentary committees and groups will convene, including the constituent meeting of the special committee for the European Democracy Shield (EUDS).

Monday 3 and Tuesday 4 February. In Warsaw, a joint informal meeting between the ministers of Industry and Internal Market (COMPET) and Trade (FAC) will be held to discuss the Union’s trade and industrial policies coordination in order to strengthen the EU’s global competitiveness and the European industrial ecosystem.

Wednesday 5 February. The Communication on tackling challenges with e-commerce platforms, edited by Vice President Henna Virkkunen, is scheduled to be published by the Commission.

Thursday 6 and Friday 7 February. The College of Commissioners will visit the Polish government in Warsaw to discuss and align the Commission’s work with the Polish Presidency’s agenda for the next six months. Quite unusually, on the Friday, the Polish parliament, gathered in plenary session, will be chaired by President Ursula von der Leyen and Polish Prime Minister Donal Tusk.

Friday 7 February. The Commission will promote a videoconference meeting between Climate Action directors-general and deputy ministers from EU member states to discuss the state of the art and future developments in European climate commitment legislation.

PARLAMENTARY COMMITTEES

Monday 3 February. The constitutive meeting of the special committee for the European Democracy Shield (EUDS), established by a parliamentary decision on 18 December, 2024, will be held. This committee has the task to assess and monitor that existing legislation and policies do not present gaps and overlaps that could be exploited for detrimental interference in European democratic processes, especially concerning online information manipulation and disinformation.

On the same day, the Committees on Budgets (BUDG) and Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON), in a joint meeting, will hold a discussion with Elena Flores, chair of the InvestEU board committee.

Thursday 6 February. The subcommittee on Tax Matters (FISC) will hold a public hearing on the topic: “A Coherent Tax Framework for the EU’s Financial Sector”.

On the same day, the Committees on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) and Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) will hold their regular meetings, whose agendas remain to be determined.
