Foresight Talk on SKILLS FOR THE TWIN TRANSITION: Building a Resilient and Future Ready Workforce

In light of the Union of Skills strategy published by Executive Vice-President Roxana Mînzatu, I-Com organized a Foresight Talk focusing on the EU’s past and future approaches to developing resilient and adaptable skills systems, essential for achieving the European goals of the twin transition.

The event featured contributions from European Parliament Vice-President Victor Negrescu (S&D), followed by presentations from Manuela Geleng, Director of Jobs & Skills, and Michael Horgan, Head of the Twin Transition Team at DG EMPL. The discussion was introduced by Alessio Caramitti, I-Com researcher, who presented the institute’s study on the current state of education, training, and digital and green skills in Europe.

The debate highlighted the central role that skill development plays in the political agenda of this term. The Union of Skills strategy, alongside the Pact for Skills, clearly signals the European Commission’s commitment to this area. Notably, digital skills have been identified as a key driver for the green transition as well.

Among the EU’s objectives to strengthen its skills system are the harmonization of certifications, professional reskilling and upskilling programs, and the ambitious yet essential goal of ensuring that 70% of Europeans possess basic digital skills.
