[tp lang=”it” not_in=”en”]La conferenza pubblica “UE-Africa”, organizzata da I-Com, l’Istituto per la Competitività, si è svolta mercoledì 5 dicembre presso il Parlamento Europeo ospitata dall’eurodeputato Benifei. Durante questa conferenza, I-Com ha presentato il suo studio sul futuro delle relazioni UE-Africa, nel contesto del piano europeo per gli investimenti esterni. Lo studio è iniziato con un focus sulle prospettive dell’economia africana e ha discusso le politiche europee per lo sviluppo dell’Africa, prima di considerare le ragioni per cui l’energia è un motore strategico per le relazioni UE-Africa. Lo studio si è concluso con alcune raccomandazioni politiche per garantire un’efficace mobilitazione delle risorse per i paesi partner in Africa, con l’obiettivo di raggiungere gli obiettivi di sviluppo sostenibile. Ai partecipanti al panel è stata data l’opportunità di discutere questi e altri temi relativi a questo importante argomento. Il documento è stato presentato e discusso con alcuni fra gli stakeholders più rilevanti, tra cui rappresentanti dell’industria, funzionari della Commissione Europea e membri del Parlamento Europeo.[/tp][tp lang=”en” not_in=”it”]The Public Conference “EU-Africa”, organized by I-Com, the Institute for Competitiveness, took place on Wednesday 5th December at the European Parliament hosted by MEP Benifei. During this conference, I-Com presented its study on the future of EU-Africa relations, in the context of the European External Investment Plan. The study began with a focus on the African economy outlook and discussed the European policies for the development of Africa, before considering the reasons making energy a strategic driver for EU-Africa relations. The study concluded with some policy recommendations to ensure an effective mobilisation of resources for partner countries in Africa, with the objective of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The panellists of this public conference were given the opportunity to discuss these and other themes related to this important topic. The paper was presented and discussed with some of the most relevant stakeholders, including industry representatives, European Commission officials and MEPs.[/tp]

Amjad Bashir travelled to the United Kingdom from Pakistan aged just eight years old, to join his father who worked in Wool mills in 1960s Bradford.
Despite speaking little English on his arrival, Amjad went on to study Chemical Engineering at Bradford University, and whilst he initially started out by working in his father’s fabric company, ended up really cutting his teeth in the restaurant trade. He opened his first restaurant in 1979 and over the next thirty five years built up a successful catering business with his sons.
Having started from scratch on more than one occasion, Amjad has always been aware of the difficulties faced by entrepreneurs; there is uncertainty in the best of times and bureaucracy can be both confusing and frustrating.
Since his election to the European Parliament in 2014, Amjad has worked tirelessly on the Employment and Social Affairs committee to support and champion Small and Medium sized businesses across Europe. In particular, he is committed to reducing burdensome regulation in order to help create a stimulating environment for businesses and start-ups.
As a full Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee Amjad focuses on (i) respect of human rights and rule of law throughout the world and in particular in Africa, Middle East and South Asia (ii) entrepreneurship-friendly and free trade policies at the EU level.
Amjad authored several resolutions on stateless people around the world, focusing in particular on the dire position of the Rohingya population in Myanmar. He also shadowed high-profile political dossiers, such as “Control of Foreign Direct Investments in the EU”.
He has also led numerous debates and events providing a comprehensive view of the limitations religious minorities, women and children encounter in their daily lives, not just in third countries, but in Europe as well.

Brando Benifei, European Federalist, is one of the youngest MEPs and is from La Spezia, Italy. He has been chair of European affairs for the Young Democrats and Vice-President of ECOSY (youth organization of PES) for 4 years and was part of the PES working group which originally drafted the European Youth Guarantee. His main fields of legislative work in the EP are Employment and social affairs, Security and Defence and Foreign affairs. He is co-chair of the Youth Intergroup and vice-chair of the Disability Intergroup. Among his parliamentary activities in the Committee of Employment and Social Affairs, he is currently Shadow rapporteur for the European Social Fund Plus, the European Solidarity Corps and was responsible for key legislative and non-legislative reports on the social inclusion and integration of refugees into the EU labour market; youth employment policy such as the Youth Guarantee and the Youth Employment Initiative; digitalisation and rights of persons with disabilities.[/tp][/accordion_son][/accordion_father]

In 1990 he was Chairman of the EPP in the Special Committee on German Unification. Between 1973-1983, he was Deputy Chairman of the Junge Union, Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Democrat Youth Committee of Europe from 1977 to 1981, Vice Chairman of the International Democrat Union from 1991 to 2003 and Founding Chairman of the International Democrat Youth Union. He is co-chair of the Transatlantic Legislators´ Dialogue (TLD) of the European Parliament and the US Congress since 1999 and is Co-Chairman of TPN. He is Deputy Chairman of the World Association of Christian Democrat International (CDI), President of the European Union of Christian Democratic Workers (EUCDW), Chairman of the CDU Federal Committee on European Policy and Chairman of the board of the European Endowment for Democracy (EED). He is also Member of the CDU Federal Board; Member of the Executive National Council of the CDU NRW and Member of the party executive of the EPP and Co-Chairman of the EPP-foreign minister. Cofinancing Coordinator-EU Funds, African Development Bank Group[/tp]
A seasoned development finance & partnerships specialist, Belinda J. Chesire, joined the African Development Bank in 2010. She is currently responsible for coordinating AfDB’s cofinancing partnership with the European Commission and is a seasoned development finance specialist. She has also served on the African Development Fund Concessional Finance team.
Prior to joining the Bank, Belinda worked at the UK Department for International Development (DFID) in Nairobi as a Social Protection Specialist, task managing the Hunger and Safety Net programme in Kenya’s Arid lands and the Orphans and Vulnerable Children programme.
She worked as a Regional Development Officer at the Canadian International Development Agency in Nairobi from 2002-2009 where she was responsible for the regional portfolio including the Nile Basin Initiative, Water and sanitation Trust Fund and East African Community. She led Canada’s contribution in the implementation of Kenya’s Free Primary Education Programme in conjunction with the World Bank and other key development partners.
Belinda has a long history of collaboration with the European Commission having started her career in 1993 at the European Commission Somalia Unit and the Delegation of the European Commission in Kenya. During her career at the EC, Belinda was seconded to the office of the National Authorising Officer at the Kenyan Ministry of Finance (The Treasury) External Resource Department, where she coordinated EC development aid to Kenya under the 8th European Development Fund.
Belinda Holds a Bachelors of Education Degree from the Kenyatta University, Nairobi; a Post Graduate Diploma in International Relations and MA in Diplomacy from the Lancaster University, UK.
She has a keen interest on the transformation of Multilateral Development Banks and leveraging new types of financial resources and instruments for the social and economic transformation of Africa.[/tp][/accordion_son][/accordion_father]

Stefano has served in key advisory or expert positions on a number of taskforces or scientific boards, including:

He has authored numerous publications on economic themes, particularly with regard to policy and regulation of the energy market and infrastructural services and the governance of the institutions, and his opinions and analysis has featured in major Italian newspapers including Il Foglio, il Sole24 Ore, Huffington Post Italia and more. Ms Leemans holds a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering.
