On May 14, the Institute for Competitiveness presents at the European Parliament in Brussels the Final Report of the Cantiere Europa initiative titled “A Roadmap for Europe’s Competitiveness and Innovation”.
Building on the basis outlined in the Draghi Report and the Competitiveness Compass, I-Com’s roadmap offers an accurate overview of the current state of play of innovation and twin transition in Europe, underlining weaknesses and strengths in a wide range of specific sectors, while proposing its own vision and insights for the achievement of the EU objectives.
Structured in four chapters, the Report firstly focuses on the main drivers of innovation: the development of a resilient skills system, raw materials, independence from third countries, and investments. The twin transition also plays a central role within the document. The second chapter addresses digitalization and technological development in various sectors, such as the state of fixed networks and the European 5G coverage, the development of AI and the EU’s delays, cloud computing systems, and public digital infrastructure.
The third chapter provides an overview of the green transition, specifically examining energy costs, exacerbated during the post-pandemic period, the need for an energy mix, and the potential role of nuclear energy in the decarbonization efforts, alongside reducing gas dependency.
Finally, the fourth chapter draws together the policy recommendations and insights emerged from the whole cycle of the Cantiere Europa initiative.
