On Thursday 27 November from 09:00 to 10:30 am, the Deep-In network and CEPS in collaboration with the Institute for Competitiveness (I-Com), organised a webinar titled: “Innovation, Patents and Europe’s Competitiveness Challenge”.
Some of the main points emerged during the discussion concerned, the limitations of the IT-Patent issuance index as a reliable measure for level of innovation. Indeed, it is a nominal measure which often fails to adequately capture distributional effects or the quality of the patents issued. The speakers also highlighted the limited diversification of European champions with respect to their core business, the relatively low levels of venture capitalists compared to US ones, and the need to harmonize standards across the EU.
We wish to thank our speakers Antonio Manganelli, University of Siena & Centre on Regulation in Europe (CERRE), Kamil Kiljanski, Head of Unit Intellectual Property, DG GROW, Bowman Heiden, University of California at Berkeley & Center for Intellectual Property (CIP) and Alessandra Rossi, University of Chieti-Pescara & Centre for a Digital Society, EUI.
