Digital, sustainability and health. The Brussels’ weekly agenda in a nutshell



The week of 2–6 February at the European institutions will be marked by meetings of the political groups and parliamentary committees in Brussels. Meanwhile, an informal meeting of the Council of the European Union, in its Competitiveness configuration, will take place in Lefkosia. Lastly, the College of Commissioners will convene for a workshop on competitiveness in preparation for the Informal EU leaders’ Retreat scheduled for 12 February — an informal summit bringing together the Heads of State and Government of the Member States in Belgium.

Monday 2 February. The Parliamentary Committee on Public Health (SANT) will meet in Brussels. On the occasion of World Cancer Day, MEPs will hold an exchange of views with experts on the fight against cancer. In addition, Neophytos Charalambides, Minister of Health of the Republic of Cyprus, will present to the SANT Committee priorities of the new Presidency of the Council. Lastly, MEPs will discuss with rapporteur Romana Jerković (S&D) the own initiative report on An EU cardiovascular diseases strategy.

Monday 2 and Tuesday 3 February. An informal meeting of Ministers for Competitiveness will take place in Lefkosia (Cyprus). Ministers from the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries, together with representatives of the European Commission, will also participate.

The agenda will focus on strengthening and integrating the European Defence Technological and Industrial Base. It will also include a review of the Competitiveness Compass one year after its publication. Lastly, with regard to the Single Market, Michael Damianos, Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, Stéphane Séjourné, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission for Prosperity and Industrial Strategy, and Michael McGrath, Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection, will discuss the Consumer Agenda 2030.

Thursday 5 February. The Committee on Budgets (BUDG), jointly with the Committee on Budgetary Control (CONT), will meet to assess and discuss the amendments submitted by 29 January to the interim report on the proposal for the multiannual financial framework for 2028-2034.

On the same day, the BUDG Committee will discuss, in the presence of Piotr Serafin, Commissioner for Budget, Anti-Fraud and Public Administration, the proposal to revise the 2021–2027 MFF Regulation concerning the financing of the loan in support of Ukraine.

Members of the CONT Committee will vote on the adoption of the own intiative report on  on the control, transparency and traceability of performance-based instruments.
