On Wednesday 11 October, I-Com – The institute for Competitiveness hosted its annual Symposium at its premises in Avenue des Arts 50, in Brussels. The 2023 symposium is titled “EU’s competitiveness formula: brainstorming ahead of 2024 elections”.

Throughout the day, during three different panel sessions, our researchers presented I-Com 2023 Study. The document provides a comprehensive state of the art of the dossiers analyzed by the Institute during 2023, as well as policy food for thoughts and work in view of the next EU legislative term.

Aim of the event was to sketch a specific competitiveness agenda with the principal long-term goal of enhancing the EU’s competitiveness as well as the bloc’s sustainable economic growth and social cohesion.

Session II, titled “Opportunities stemming from virtual worlds” focused on the significant technological and regulatory challenges and economical opportunities that the EU will face in the upcoming years due to the emergence of the Metaverse.

Beatrice Covassi is a Member of the European Parliament since December 2022. Previously she worked in London as Minister Counsellor at the newly established EU Delegation to the UK and, between 2016 and 2019 as Head of the European Commission Representation to Italy, where she acted as the political ambassador of the President and Commission spokesperson in the country.

Yvo Volman is the Director of the Data directorate in the Directorate General for Communication Networks, Content and Technology of the European Commission. He worked for the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs in the areas of industrial and technology policy, before joining the European Commission in 1998.
