MAKING EUROPE SAFER. Data, networks and cloud: Drivers of cybersecurity in Europe

Member of the European Parliament since 2014, Vice-Chair of Delegation to the EU-Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee, Member of Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, Committee on Constitutional Affairs and Delegation to the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly, Substitute Member to Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and Delegation to the EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Association Committee. Michal Boni holds a PhD from the University of Warsaw where he lectured in the Department of Polish Culture for many years. Involved in the ‘Solidarity’ underground movement since 1980 and a member of the national authorities of ‘Solidarity’ since 1989, he became Chairman of the Mazowsze Region Management Board in 1990. He served as Minister of Labour and Social Policy in 1991 and from 1992 until 1993 as Secretary of State in the same ministry responsible for labour market policy. Between 1998 and 2001 he was the Chief Advisor to the Minister of Labour and Social Policy. From 2008 he served as Minister- Head of Strategic Advisors to the Prime Minister Donald Tusk and from 2011 until 2013 as Minister of Administration and Digitisation of Poland. In 2016 Michal Boni was awarded a MEP award in category research and innovation.

Head of Unit ‘Cybersecurity and Digital Privacy’ within the European Commission in Brussels (Directorate-General Communication Networks, Content and Technology). Among others involved in the negotiations of the recently adopted Network and Information Security (NIS) directive, the implementation of the EU cyber-security strategy’s actions on resilience, industrial measures and Research and Innovation under H2020, and cooperation with the EU Agency for Network and Information Security (ENISA). He also directly contributed to the production of the new EU Cyber Security Strategy. Previously Head of Unit ‘Organised Crime and Relations with EMCDDA’ at the European Commission (Directorate-General Home Affairs), which has the lead responsibility for the fight against cybercrime, corruption, sexual abuse of children and confiscation of criminal assets. In relation to cybercrime, involved in negotiation and drafting of two directives (on cyber-attacks and sexual exploitation of children), establishment of the European Cybercrime Centre (EC3) and drafting of the EU Cyber Security Strategy. Previously worked on EU relations with Russia (Directorate-General External Relations). Before joining the European Commission, a Director at the Stefan Batory Foundation in Warsaw and Policy Officer with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Graduate of the London School of Economics and the University of Warsaw (international relations, law).

Managing Director of the Delegation of Confindustria to the EU. Overall responsibility for setting and implementing the strategy of the office, and managing its budget. Coordinate a team of 20 people. Reporting to the Board of Confindustria. Responsible representative of Confindustria in Brussels before European institutions and Italian and European key stakeholders.

Antonino Claudio Cascio, after earning a Master’s degree in law, joined the Italian diplomatic corps. He filled several positions at the Italian Embassies and at the Italian Permanent Representation in Bruxelles. He is currently First Counselor at the Permanent Representation of Italy to the EU and he is a Knight of the Order of Malta.

Stefano is the president and principal policy analyst at I-Com, the Institute for Competitiveness, a think tank based in Rome and Brussels which he founded in 2005. He currently teaches political economy and economic policy at the Roma Tre University, in Rome. Stefano is a graduate of the Coripe Consortium for Research and Continuing Education in Economics (Piemonte, Italy), where he received a Masters Degree in Economics and the George Mason University (Virginia, USA) where he obtained his MA (Economics). Stefano has served in key advisory or expert positions on a number of taskforces or scientific boards, including:

• Director at the Observatory on Energy Policy of the Einaudi Foundation;
• Expert Member of the Technical Secretariat for the Protection of Nature in the Italian Ministry of the Environment;
• Expert Member of the Eurelectric Task Force on Investment;
• Scientific Director of the La Scossa Association;
• Board member of the European Foundation EYPROM;
• Vice President of the Health City Institute.

He has authored numerous publications on economic themes, particularly with regard to policy and regulation of the energy market and infrastructural services and the governance of the institutions, and his opinions and analysis has featured in major Italian newspapers including Il Foglio, il Sole24 Ore, Huffington Post Italia and more. Stefano has also undertaken study and consultancy assignments for Italian and international public institutions, including the Senate of the Republic, the Department for EU policies, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and the OECD, leading Italian and foreign companies and non-profit organizations.

After graduating with honors in Electronic Engineering in 1980 at Federico II University in Naples, he carried out research activities at the Olivetti Research Center for Mechanical Technologies and Automation (RTM). In 1981 he started his activity in Enel in the ICT Development area where he managed telecommunication and automation projects, also with the use of AI technologies. Since 1990 he has worked in the Enel Operations ICT field, where he has been in charge of different processes (Data Centers management, Release management, End User Support). Since 2014, he is working in the Global Cyber Security unit of Enel, participating in all the main initiatives in the area, including the redesign of the new organizational framework and the Cyber Risk Analysis methodology.

Maria GRAPINI – (born on the 7th of November, 1954, Bereşti, Galati County, Romania) is a business woman, engineer and politician from Romania. From May, 2014 she is a MEP.

• She graduated the Theoretical High School in Bereşti in 1973 and followed the “Gheorghe Asachi” Technical University from Iaşi, Faculty of Textiles, Specialization “Mechanical Technology of Filing and Weaving”, which she graduated in 1978;
• From January 1990 until 2012, she was General Manager of SC Pasmatex S.A. During this period, she was very involved in the development of the textile industry and the creation of jobs in this branch. From 2002 to 2010, she was the president of the Light Industry Employers’ Federation, Vice President of UGIR 1903, and since 2003, member of the National Exporters’ Council;
• She was almost every year nominated in “The Top 50 succesful Women in Romania”, published by Capital magazine;
• She joined politics 15 years after the Revolution of 1989, set up and led several NGOs,
• Since then, she has occupied several public functions, of which the most important are:

– 1998 – 2012: President of the Association of Women Entrepreneurs in Romania;

– 1994-1998 and 2002-2006: Vice-President of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture of Timisoara;

– From 2005 to 2015 President of the Humanist Party ( Conservative )

– 2015 – Present: Co-President at the national level of the Party of    Humanitarian  Power (Social-Liberal) in Romania and the  President of the Timis County Branch;

– December 21, 2012 – March, 2014: Deputy Minister for Small and Medium Enterprises, Business and Tourism in the Victor Ponta’s second Government (2012-2016);

– From May, 2014 – present: Member of the European Parliament;

• 2000- The order of knighthood from Romanian Presidency for the contribution to the economic development of Romania.
• For her outstanding involvement in all her activities she has been rewarded with numerous awards.

Andreas Schwab is a German politician and Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for Germany. He is a member of the Christian Democratic Union, part of the European People’s Party.Member of the European Parliament, 2004–present. Schwab serves on the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO), where he deals with network and information security.He is the European People’s Party Group’s coordinator on the committee. From 2010 to 2011, Schwab drafted the European Parliament’s report on the EU Consumer Rights Directive.As shadow rapporteur, he has issued opinions on the negotiations for the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (2015) and on the Annual Report on EU Competition Policy (2015). In 2014, he co-sponsored a non-binding bill before the European Parliament calling on the European Commission to consider separating Google’s search-engine business from its other commercial activities to ensure fair competition on the internet.He currently leads the European Parliament’s negotiating team on internet platform regulation in Europe.

After studying law at Humboldt University of Berlin, she joined the Communications & EU Government Affairs team at Siemens AG. In 2014, she became Senior Manager for European and International Competition and Antitrust Law, State Aid Policy at BDI, where she currently holds the position as a Senior Manager for Digitalisation, Innovation and Healthcare.

Henna Virkkunen is a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and a substitute of the Committee on Transport and Tourism. She has served several ministerial posts in Finland as a Minister of Education and Science, Minister of Public Administration and Local Governance and Minister of Transport. Virkkunen is a keen advocate of education and skills as these equip European people for future trends such as digitalisation. She has worked as a rapporteur on digital platforms. Virkkunen eagerly promotes new technologies and wants to see more innovations in Europe. She is currently working in the committees as EPP-rapporteur with files on blockchain, intelligent transport, cybersecurity and free flow of data. Virkkunen is a licentiate of Philosophy.
